Mad Men Dress Challenge: Betty Draper

I chose this amazing Pucci esque maxi dress for the Mad Men Dress Challenge. I've been making myself use my stash of fabric for all projects, so I used the below fabric instead of buying yet more fabric and I can't even express how much I love how this dress turned out! I've just finished it in time for the deadline but as a result there was no daylight left for photos so I'll be wearing this dress right away so I can get some real photos of it!

To make this dress I used my basic bodice sloper and then drew in the style lines from the photos shown above. If you don't have a basic bodice sloper you could take a fitted bodice pattern piece and do the same thing. For the skirt I got smart and measured how much fabric I had left and found I just had enough left for the skirt. I didn't make any pattern pieces for the skirt, I just measured the length I needed and used the width of the fabric to give me the fullness I was going for. I also lined the bodice to enclose all the seams and finished off the dress with an invisible side seam zipper.

It's Chartreuse Really

Fur Coat: Thrifted
Cardigan: Joe Fresh
Dress: Banana Republic
Belt: Winners
Tights: Winners
Shoes: Nine West
Necklace & Ring: Mexico

The first time I wore this dress I think I had messed up the camera setting because it looked yellow in the photos. Hopefully now the greeny tinge shows better?

This post was supposed to go up this morning and then when I went to post the link via my IPhone today I noticed the post wasn't up and tried to check out what had happened. I guess I forgot to alter the time so when I tried to post it via my phone the post came up blank? Has that ever happened to you? Maybe I need setting up blogger through my phone or something? I haven't taken the time to look into yet.....

So here is my post Take 2!

I need to go finish my Mad Men Dress Challenge dress now!

Patti Dress Challenge

Behold my Patti dress is complete! Days before the deadline and everything! My fabric covered buttons are blending in like camouflage, impressed?

This is from a 50's pattern I got a while back, I used the pattern pieces but didn't look at the instructions until after. Apparently there's supposed to be a side zipper, and the buttons up the front are faux or whatever you want to call it. Well it's a real closure for me and no zipper. Maybe next time!

Random Monday

Mad Men Dress Challenge progress (very little) and it's supposed to be finished for the end of March!

My latest pattern from the Vintage Pattern Lending Library. I think I can make this as a fun summer dress and have a lot of ideas and fabric choices already in my stash I'm thinking I can use.

I stitched maybe half a dozen seams this weekend so not productive but it was a fun weekend, including going to see The Hunger Games (it was fabulous), going to see a Roughnecks (Lacrosse) game and hiking out in Kanaskis with the Beau and Rusty.

Hope you had a fabulous weekend and Happy Monday!

Blinding Light

Cardigan: Thrifted
Top: Thrifted
Maxi Skirt: Thrifted
Headband: F21
Tights: Winners
Heels: The Shoe Company

It's been one of those weeks, busy at work, then a whole bunch of cupcakes I had committed to making and a bernard callebaut dark chocolate ganache that refused to stiffen up so I could put it on my cupcakes.... A concert with some lady friends that was a blast... The following night was spent recovering from said evening out with the ladies!

There really is a shirt under my cardigan, although the blinding sunshine would make you think otherwise! The weather the past two weeks after work has been rather crazy, everything from freak blizzards to crazy windstorms and I'm not taking photos in either. I'm sure you understand, right?

I got another historical pattern which is for a ladies princess slip that I think I will fashion into a summer dress for my version. I can't wait to show you, I have so many ideas though, I need to narrow them down first!

That's all for my random blabs, have a fabulous weekend!

Jeweled Croc

Cardigan: Thrifted
Top: F21
Skirt: Winners
Ring: F21
Tights: Winners
Shoes: Aldo

I can't get enough of this little croc ring lately! We've been having some lovely weather lately, sunny at least but the wind is still icy cold when it picks up, hence the thick cardigan still!

This past weekend I went and saw 21 Jump Street, I have to say it was ridiculous and so hilarious! The beau and I also went to the car show and I got to test drive a Fiat! It was so tiny but fun to drive, it reminded me of Charlize Theron driving (like a crazy person) her mini in The Italian Job!!!

I'm keeping busy working on summer clothes in my free time, I have to pick up some elastic for a pair of printed pants I finished up yesterday, and I just have buttonholes and stitching on the buttons of my Patti dress left. I also got a toile done for my mad men dress and got my pattern alterations done so hopefully I will have the actual fabric cut out this evening.

I'm also trying to get some sketches done to plan out my other projects, stay tuned!

Happy Monday, how did you celebrate St. Patty's?

Sequin Bow

My exposure went crazy on this photo but I had to show off the bow!

Fishy ring!

Ralph Lauren Blazer: Thrifted
BCBG Top: Thrifted
Pants: Anthropologie
Steve Madden Booties: DSW
Necklace: F21

I admit that on last weeks shopping trip I did go a little accessory crazy at F21, but how could I not? I think I did surprisingly well considering just how many amazing things they had, but hey there's always next time!

I also got everything on my Patti dress done except for the buttons and buttonholes last night so on to my printed pants projects this weekend.

Whatever you're up to this weekend I hope you have fun!

Ultimate Fabric Sale

The stripe goes with the selvage, I just took the photo at a not so great angle! This fabric is actually sheer and I'm planning on using it for sheer pants!

This fabric has birds on it and actually fades from more blue on one selvage to more birds on the other, this is just the middle section. I'm not sure what I'll be doing with this but no matter what I'm sure it will be awesome!

This fabric is mostly the white with black flower outline before going into this beautiful color medley. I'm thinking a dress, but it would also look amazing as pants and I only got 1.5m so I can't do both!

So much for me resisting fabric shopping before the big Grandma's for Africa sale coming up in a month!

Horsin' Around

Faux Fur Vest: Selfmade
Top: Joe Fresh
Belt: Winners
Skirt: Gift from Natasha
Tights: Winners
Shoes: Aldo
Ring: F21
Hair Clips: F21
Necklace: Thrifted

How could a day go wrong when I have my new horse accessories from Forever 21?! Thankfully my close up shots worked so I could show you how fabulous they are! I would also call this amazing horse ring a "face buster" as in don't mess with me! No just kidding, I don't want no messing of no faces.

On a new note, we're almost half way to Halloween and I don't know what I'll be dressing up as.... This has never happened before, at least not as long as I an remember, you see Halloween is Holiday numero 1 in this girls world, it requires many hours planning, plotting, and so forth..... The reason I bring this up is because last night the beau and I went and saw John Carter which I thought would be full of costume inspirations. The princess had fabulous costumes but they were all a wee (a lot) bit too much revealing for my tastes and would probably require a gym committment and as a realist I know that would never happen. Summer blockbusters are coming up, maybe something will catch my eye....

Flight Of Fancy

Fish ring!

Lace Jacket: Thrifted
Bow Top: Le Chateau
Pants: Selfmade
Shoes: Aldo
Fish Ring:F21

Friday night involved some retail therapy with a friend where I found these lovely little shoes, they're to replace my black and white oxfords that I actually wore to pieces. So sad! We went to F21 where I found a whole bag load of accessories that I can't wait to model! One particular piece is quite fanciful and sparkly.......

Just you wait!

Oh and I did get the bodice done on my Patti dress and start drafting my mad men dress pattern, yay for a productive weekend!

A Day For Me

Vest: H & M Rome
Top: Thrifted
Pants: Suzy Shier
Bangles: Ten Thousand Villages
Earrings: Street Festival
Shoes: Winners

Yesterday the beau and I took off to the mountains for an amazing day of boarding. This past week has been an amazing week for snow in the mountains and we decided to take full advantage of it, so we took off the day from work and headed out to Castle Mountain down by Crows Nest Pass. I've never been to this mountain but now I understand why people say it's one of Alberta's best kept secrets, The powder was phenomenal!!!!

Thanks to an awesome lady at work who one day told me to take a couple days off while I could and enjoy the powder because soon enough we're going to be swamped. That certainly put things into perspective for me.

I'm posting these rather not so great photo's of me in an effort to remind myself of why I don't get the beau to take photos ever. I think either Albert Einstein or Alexander Graham Bell said that repeating something and expecting different results was the definition of insanity..... Well thats where the beau and I are when I try to get him to take photos! We all have our strengths, and I guess this teaches me to not have lazy moments and that setting up a tripod really isn't that difficult... Regardless of the photos this was a delightfully comfortable outfit, I would say most of my outfits are comfortable, why wear an outfit you're going to fidget in, but this was like wearing pajama's!

What are you doing this weekend? I'm still trying to decide on spring wardrobe pieces to make while still getting out to enjoy the snow, an interesting mix I think! Well whatever you're up to, I hope it's something fun!!!!

An Exciting Day!

Jacket: Selfmade
Scarf: Florence leather market
Parasuco jeans: Winners
Boots: The Shoe Company
Leather Gloves: Gift from Natasha

Yesterday was a great day, I finally pulled out my big red coat, I also got to wear my polka dot fedora, and my first pattern from the Vintage Pattern Lending Library came! A while back in a Threads magazine newsletter there was a note about signing up for the Vintage Pattern Lending Library to test patterns and I thought to myself "That would be super fun!" so here's my first and I can't wait to get started.

You can find more information about the Vintage Pattern Lending Library here

Happy Wednesday!

Sheer Pants

By the time I was done work and able to do outfit photo's yesterday there was another blizzard happening outside and there was no way I was doing that! So instead I'm sharing something that I'm quite inspired to make as part of my Spring wardrobe! Thanks to my friend Melissa for sharing these fabulous sheer pants from F21, I happen to have quite a few sheer fabrics in a variety of prints in my stash and I'm so excited to hopefully be doing a pair of sheer pants like these ones.

A New Home For Old Treasures

Lace Jacket: Gift
Top: Thrifted
Jeans: Thrifted
Shoes: The Shoe Company
Ring: ?
Necklace: Gift
Bracelet: Ten Thousand Villages

This beautiful lace jacket comes to me courtesy of a most fabulous lady who volunteers where I work. Her name is Barb and as per this jacket she has some fabulous pieces in her closet. She had mentioned to my co worker and I that she had some items in her closet she was going to bring to us, she had been keeping them in her closet because she deemed them too special to be taken to Value Village. Well boy was she right! I love everything about this lace jacket, and to top it off it has a fabulous skirt to match! I can't say that I'll be wearing the pieces together but as separates I absolutely love them! I got a few other pieces from Barb too so stay tuned for their appearance!

Meanwhile, I had a fabulous weekend, finding more ideas than I will ever need for my Spring/Summer wardrobe and creating a lovely board for all of these designer marvels on Pinterest! One of my top favorites is a plaid dress with a sheer overskirt by..... Well Pinterest doesn't want to cooperate for me right now so I can't tell you who it's by but find me on Pinterest so you can find out!

Are you on Pinterest? Let me know, I'm always looking for more creative inspiration!

I'm hoping to get sewing projects done this weekend that should of been done a while ago(Natasha)! Boo for stressfull deadlines and etc that cut into sewing time for me!

I'm also starting to work on my spring wardrobe, or at least research and plan what I want to make. Are your doing any kind of spring wardrobe planning?
